Dr. Kanakamedala is a board-certified, cornea fellowship-trained ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract surgery, LASIK/PRK, corneal transplantation and refractive lens implant surgery. She is certified on the LENSAR™ femtosecond laser for cataract surgery, Ziemer™ femtosecond laser, and the WaveLight® EX500 excimer laser, providing customized refractive cataract surgery, including multifocal IOLs, LASIK, and PRK. Her interest and experience in cataract surgery includes micro-incision techniques and the use of the femtosecond laser, as well as complex cataract surgery. In addition to cataract, refractive and corneal surgeries, Dr. Kanakamedala performs advanced surgical procedures such as Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and scleral fixated intraocular lenses. She also performs corneal crosslinking for keratoconus.
Dr. Kanakamedala was born and raised in Dyer, Indiana. She attended Duke University and graduated with distinction with a BA in a self-designed major Genomics, Race, & Global Health policy. She completed medical school at the Indiana University School of Medicine and transitional year residency at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois. She then did her ophthalmology residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine where she was selected as chief resident by her attendings and peers. She has also participated in multiple research investigations, which she has presented at national conferences throughout her training. She completed an accredited fellowship in Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining North Suburban Eye Specialists she practiced cornea and comprehensive ophthalmology in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Dr. Kanakamedala has extensive international health experience and has spent time in Indonesia, Switzerland, Kenya, and India.
