    About Dr. Stephen LoBue

Stephen A. LoBue MD is a Cataract, Refractive, Anterior-Segment Surgeon and Director of Research at LoBue Laser and Eye Medical Center.

Dr. LoBue’s passion for research began in medical school at St. George’s University where he was awarded a distinction in research among his peers. To further develop his research abilities, he underwent a two-year vitreoretinal research fellowship under the tutelage of Timothy W. Olsen M.D. at Emory University and Mayo Clinic, focusing on a new surgical treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Learning the fundamentals under his mentors, Dr. LoBue became the Director of Research at LoBue Laser and Eye Medical Center which has completed over 30 clinical trials since 2017. After a two-year research fellowship, Dr. LoBue attended SUNY Downstate Medical Center for residency where he was chief resident and completed 9 peer-reviewed publications and presented 17 abstracts at several major ophthalmology conferences including ASCRS, ARVO, and AAO.

After residency, Dr. LoBue completed a high-volume Cataract, Refractive, and Anterior-Segment fellowship at the Willis-Knighton Eye Institute. Working under Wyche Coleman III M.D. and Christopher Shelby M.D., Dr. LoBue performed over 3,000 procedures involving corneal crosslinking, LASIK, SMILE, PRK, ICL, FLACS, presbyopia-correcting IOLs, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), complex cataract surgery, and flanged intrascleral haptic fixation.

Prior to the completion of his fellowship, Dr. LoBue established a research department at Willis-Knighton Eye Institute, focusing on analyzing large datasets, improving patient outcomes, and participating in clinical trials. Most notably he was first author on several peer-reviewed articles including topics on improving/optimizing multifocal lens performance and techniques to manage complicated cataracts. Currently, he has his first postdoctoral research fellow, Curtis Martin M.D., assisting him in several projects.

Dr. LoBue recently became the Director of Research and Primary Investigator for a new lens-based company, Glaive Medical Optics, which has completed phase one of initial funding. He will be leading the team in obtaining additional funding through NIH and NSF grants. Dr. LoBue has published over 50 abstracts/peer-reviewed articles with ambitions to further contribute to the field of cataract and refractive surgery.

Outside of his clinical duties, Dr. LoBue loves to hike, play tennis, and paddleboard in the ocean.
