Dr. Donald Downer is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in cataracts, cornea, and refractive surgery.
Dr. Downer completed his Internship at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, in Roanoke, Virginia. He then continued his Ophthalmology Residency at The University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. In addition, Dr. Downer continued his training with the completion of a Cornea Fellowship in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.
Dr. Downer is a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Florida Medical Association and the Clay County Medical Society.
Dr. Downer has an impressive background in Ophthalmology. He was the first physician in North Florida to perform a successful IC-8 Apthera Lens Implant, and was one of the first surgeons in North Florida to perform a surgical procedure to help improve central vision in patients with end-stage ARMD, involving surgically placing a miniature telescope in one eye that magnifies images. “I’m always excited to be on the cutting edge of ophthalmology advancements.”
Dr. Downer’s ophthalmology training and experience led him to Clay Eye Physicians & Surgeons in North Florida. Here, he serves as a Senior Cornea Specialist and Laser Cataract Surgeon. His expertise as a cornea surgeon with special interest include: lifestyle intraocular lenses, diseases of the cornea, corneal transplantation, ocular surface reconstruction and ocular infectious disease.
